The intense rains and high winds of monsoon season in the Southwest here. The high concentration of moisture and very real flash flooding risk during monsoon months can wreak havoc on the exteriors of homes and other buildings.

Property owners should understand that water supply lines or pressurized toilet tanks can create flooding dangers inside a residential or commercial structure, leading to significant damages to a building’s materials and structure. To prevent a flooding incident that can cause serious damage to a structure’s walls, floors or ceilings, at American Restoration Water & Fire, LLC, we recommend checking all of a building’s plumbing fixtures inside and outside of a building frequently.

Home and business owners throughout New Mexico considering upgrading their roofing may want to consider the advantages as well as disadvantages of installing a flat roof rather than one featuring sloped construction. American Restoration Water and Fire LLC understands that flat roofs are becoming increasingly popular because of their affordability, but they must be properly sealed in order to maintain their structural integrity as well as properly maintained in order to prevent roof leaks.

The worst part about a flood is the flood cleanup and water damage to a property. Fortunately, there are water damage restoration companies to assist in the cleanup. American Restoration is here to help you mitigate the damage caused by water either from natural floods, broken pipes, or another accident.

Asbestos has been heavily used in the recent past as a soundproof, insulator and fireproof material in all types of buildings. It was later determined to be the cause of serious and fatal lung disorders. It is generally not considered to be a hazard unless it is disturbed from the location it rests. Removal is important, but you want to make sure it is done by experts like American Restoration that are EPA/AHERA certified.

There are several effective ways to prevent pipes from freezing. In addition to keeping the interior temperature from dropping below 32 degrees and properly insulating the space, try these tricks:

~ Provide a reliable back-up power source, such as a stand by generator, to ensure continuous power to the building.

~Interior building temperature can be monitored by a central monitoring company to ensure prompt notification if the interior of the building reaches low temperatures after hours, during power outages or idle periods.

Our rainy season is fast approaching. What does that mean for mold? The opportunity greatly increases for leaking, stagnant water to come into your home, causing dangerous mold to grow where you live. If you've ever had a water leak in your home, you'll know the smell and the tell-tale visual signs.

The Centers for Disease Control and the Institute of Medicine indicate that mold is linked to a variety of illnesses. These illnesses can range from lung irritation in healthy people - asthma-like symptoms, to acute respiratory illnesses in immunocompromised individuals. Mold will thrive on virtually any organic substance where moisture and oxygen are present. Undiscovered mold can be especially hazardous as it is considered a toxic substance and will often cause respiratory distress to those who are exposed.

Disasters: Are you in denial?

Unfortunately, natural and man-made disasters strike every day. Our staff attended a meeting of the Albuquerque Office of Emergency Management and found some useful safety information that we would like to pass along to you and your business.

First-- some alarming data for small business owners! According to the Small Business Administration, at least 25% of businesses impacted by a disaster do not reopen. Additionally, more than 60% of businesses affected by a man-made or natural disaster close within two years. Staggering statistics!

So, what should you be doing?

The staff at American Restoration Water and Fire, LLC would like to congratulate our employee, Riley Spill for achieving his certification in Water Damage from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification. The IICRC is a non-profit organization that sets the standard for the inspection, cleaning, and restoration industries. The IICRC serves 25 countries throughout the world.

It’s important to understand the differences between a thunderstorm watch, thunderstorm warning, flash flood watch, and a flash flood warning. A thunderstorm watch means that conditions are favorable for a thunderstorm. You should be mindful of your surroundings and listen to weather reports.
