Unknown Fire Dangers in Your Heating Systems

As we get closer to those cold weather months it is important to re-evaluate your residential or business heat source. You may be unaware of the potential fire dangers of furnaces and portable heaters that are lurking in your home or business. At American Restoration, we want to ensure you are safe and warm this coming winter, so we have compiled a short list of tips to prevent common fire dangers.

Safety tips for Portable Heater use

Portable heaters have become a convenient device in offices and smaller homes. Always be sure to check for any damage to cords of your unit. Even a small fray in the cording can allow for a spark strong enough to start a fire.

Ensure that any portable heaters are on a steady, flat surface that has no less than a three feet clearance of anything flammable. Flammable materials include items such as curtains, drapes, sheets, carpeting, beds, sofas, and the list goes on.

You should never leave a heater on while unattended or sleeping.

Safety tips for Furnace use

  • Keep the surrounding area of your furnace clean and clear. Never store anything flammable or combustible near the area.
  • Do not close off more than 20% of the register vents in your home or business. Also ensure the vents are not being blocked by furniture or debris, such as dust, pet hair, or lint.
  • Schedule regular furnace cleaning and maintenance check-ups. Also, be sure to change the air filter as needed.
  • Install and routinely check carbon monoxide detectors in your home or business. Carbon monoxide is an odorless, deadly gas that can leak throughout your home undetected without a properly working detector.

With cold weather rapidly approaching confirm that your heating source is safe with these simple tips. If tragedy does strike, American Restoration Water and Fire is here to help you get you back into your home quickly!
