Shut Your Swamp Cooler Down Before the First Freeze!

Also known as evaporative coolers, swamp coolers are popular ways to keep homes and businesses cool in desert states like New Mexico. It is important to winterize units during the fall before cold weather arrives. Proper maintenance helps avoid flooding, protects building interiors, and extends unit life. Our technicians see it all too often with damaged pipes or improper winterization of equipment.

Business and homeowners alike appreciate how simple it is to properly shut down a swamp cooler before the outside temperature drops below freezing. First disconnect the power. Next, shut off and drain the water valve to the cooler to keep the valve from freezing. Disconnect and drain all swamp cooler lines to prevent water pipes from freezing during cold weather. Remove water from the cooler pan and dry it out. Avoid flooding by leaving the drain open so rainwater will flow out if it enters the unit.

If the cooler is permanently installed, we recommend closing the damper and covering the unit after removing and storing hoses and connections for the winter. It keeps rain, dust and sand from entering the vents, thus avoiding dirty filters, leaks, and mold or mildew.

Frozen pipes can burst as they expand and contract because the water flow is disrupted. American Restoration Water and Fire is the professional to call when there are signs of water damage or leaks in your home or business. Flood restoration services are also available.

Reporting emergencies quickly allow us to secure or replace pipes quickly, minimizing damage and reducing the affected areas.
