Do you need to remove mold from the carpet in your home? This can happen in so many ways, like a kid spilling water and it ended up sitting there for an extended amount of time, shoes and wet shoe traffic, and more. Mold in carpet poses health risks as well, especially in an area of carpet that sees a lot of foot traffic which then can carry those mold spores from room to room. American Restoration Water & Fire has a few tips on how to remove mold from our carpet naturally and effectively. For areas of carpet that need more attention, contacting a carpet cleaning specialist will be in your home’s best interest. American Restoration would like to stress the importance of taking extra safety precautions when dealing with mold: wearing protective gear, eye coverings, masks, and gloves.

Dish Detergent: Do you have a carpet shampooer or know someone who does? Fill the water reservoir with hot tap water and once it is to the “max fill” line, add a tablespoon of dish detergent. Adding it last will reduce the number of bubbles in the water. This will help rid your carpet of the less severe types of mold and will be gone in a few minute’s time.

Vinegar & Baking Soda: This combination, while typically used to demonstrate a volcanic eruption at your local middle school science fair, is better used in this instance as separate entities. First, you will want to spray the area heavily with vinegar and allow it to sit for at least an hour. Vinegar is known to better remove the mold because it penetrates the mold’s roots and kills it there! After an hour, and you’ve cleaned the area with hot water, create a paste with baking soda and once again, allow it to sit for an hour to dry. This will help remove the dead mold when you run the shop vac over it.

Lysol & Water: This technique removes mild mold contamination in your carpet. Mix 1 Cup of Lysol with hot water. Spray on the area, and let sit for 30 minutes. Rinse the area and use a shop vac to remove the excess water.
