Although they’re gorgeous, icicles may signal an underlying problem with your roofing. Icicles are generally caused by melting snow, and, often snow melts because of poor insulation and ventilation in your home beneath your roof. If left unaddressed, the same conditions that produce icicles can lead to the development of ice dams – thick ridges of solid ice that build up along the edge of your roof.

When snow accumulates on your roof, poor insulation and ventilation can cause warm air beneath your roof to be unevenly distributed. This warm air melts the bottom layer of snow on your roof, while the ambient outdoor temperature remains below 32 degrees keeping the top layer of snow in its solid state. The snow that melts runs off to the edge of the roof where it freezes once again. This buildup of ice at the edge of your roof inhibits the future runoff of melted snow and traps water on your roof underneath a top layer of snow. Ice dams can grow to a thickness of over 4-5 inches.

Ice dams are dangerous because the water that they trap has to go somewhere, and often it causes costly damage and leaks on your roof. If you notice ice dams forming on your roof, don’t wait for the ensuing water damage, call American Restoration.
