Forecasters are hoping for a wet monsoon season this year. In New Mexico, this means dramatic weather for many parts of the state. American Restoration Fire & Water responds to numerous monsoon related flood calls each year, so we know how important it is stay safe this time of year. Here are some flood safety tips:

Try to avoid leaving the safety of your home during a heavy storm, most flash flood deaths occur in vehicles. Moving water just 1-2 feet deep can carry away most vehicles, so seek an alternate route if you can’t determine water depth on the road. The heavy rains brought on by monsoon season may cause road closures, so it’s a good idea to stock up on food, water, and first aid items before the storms arrive.

When there is a flood danger, remember that flash floods are the #1 weather related killer, so avoid arroyos. Flash flooding can produce waters that travel at a speed of up to 40 miles per hour, which means if you’re in an arroyo when a flood strikes, it will be nearly impossible to get out. The water may look calm on the surface, but below, strong currents can make it difficult, even for skilled swimmers, to escape.

Flash flooding can pose a threat to the integrity of your home as well. Check your roof before monsoon season to identify any weaknesses that might allow water to creep into your home. Browse through our blog for information on how to inspect your roof and how to fix any leaks or cracks. We also offer specific tips on how to prepare your home to withstand flooding and water damage.
